TESTIMONIALSI have always enjoyed having and arranging flowers. While attending a leadership course, they asked us to write down something, we always wanted to do but never did and to list the obstacles that prevented us from taking this action. I immediately wrote down: Having a flower business. The obstacles were many, but the class partner simply said to me, "Why don't you take classes and do this business on the side?" As soon as I left the course, I began searching the web for resources to learn professional flower arranging. The web provided me with formal programs that were long term but at age 50 I was not compelled to seek more formal education. My daughter who was assisting me in my search found the Flowerhandlers site and gave me the information. Flowerhandlers was perfect for me, weekend schedules, affordable prices and courses that provided hands on experience in flower arranging. I called and signed up for my first class. I did not know what to expect but was very excited. At my very first class, I came home with 3 beautiful arrangements that I created myself. I was very proud that I took my first step towards a long term goal that I always thought about but had never acted on. The classes offered are flexible, provide practical skills, and the lesson sheets provided are easy to follow long after you take the class. Hands on learning works best for me and Flowerhandlers provides me that opportunity. I learned more than what I expected and continue to learn each time I take a class with Dottie. She is helpful, patient and always willing to provide lots of insights into the flower business. I have to admit sometimes the classes can be fast paced since I like to take photos of each step as we go along for future reference. I also recommend learning about the different types of flowers and greenery because there are so many kinds. Flower arranging is very therapeutic and the hours fly by when I'm engaged in learning or arranging flowers. When making flower arrangements I think of nothing but how to create something special and beautiful, plus each piece is unique. Besides practice makes perfect as they say. I use the skills I have learned in many ways. During certain holidays, I put together a flyer showcasing several types of flower arrangements and distribute the flyer to family, friends and co-workers and take orders. This method allows me to work out of my home and continue practicing my craft. Last Christmas I had just completed the holiday classes. Taking advantage of my new knowledge, I gave my neighbors and relatives beautiful holiday flower arrangements as gifts. They all loved them and could not believe that I made them myself. I also made a few arrangements for my office and placed them around. As a result, I received several orders. So, I have accomplished one of my long term goals. It's a small side business but its very gratifying and the start of more to come, as I prepare for a second career. There is one small flaw in learning this craft ... now when I get invited to a function, I am expected to show up with a flower arrangement! Thanks to Flowerhandlers for assisting me in achieving my dream. My next goal is to convert my garage into my own flower studio ... - Myrna Rivera |
