Q.) What can I expect from these classes and courses?

A.) From the completion of your very first CLASS or COURSE you can expect to:

From the completion of your very first Class or Course you can expect to:

  • Accomplish Immediate Success - Right from the start you will successfully design and take home, completed projects that make you proud and happy.
  • Feel a Sense of Confidence - This is complete emersion, hands-on, experiential learning from the first few minutes of your class to the end of each course!
  • Once you have finished even the first class, have Seen, Heard, and Done your design procedures, you'll understand and know them on such a cellular level that you'll be able to adapt and repeat them confidently on your own for your own use.
  • Have the Benefit of Practice - At the Flowerhandlers Design School you are encouraged to take your finished pieces home, take them apart, and rearrange them - again and again.
  • It's all been set up for you to have several projects that are large enough to be taken apart and redesigned later. The flowers are fresh and will last all week long so you can have fun honing your skills everyday - enjoying your flowers while reinforcing the lessons you learned.
  • Realize the Value of Speed and Proficiency - Taking an hour or more to make a flower arrangement is a great way to decompress from a stress-filled life. But professional designers and busy flower lovers need to be able to start and complete multiple arrangements quickly!
  • Whether you are designing to decorate your own home, designing for income, or designing to serve your community our formulas will allow you to design with speed and proficiency. Our students have been pleased with their accomplishments and their ability to put their design skills to "real time", "real world" use. It is a fast & easy learning process.
  • Experience Long-Term Retention - Once you've DONE something you can't forget the experience but sometimes it helps to have reminders that refresh your memory of the details!
  • Flowerhandlers students receive worksheets for every project or lesson they take. Simply compile your instructions, notes, sketches, and pictures into a floral journal. Organize it into classes and courses so it's easy to find the perfect lesson to help with whatever current project you are undertaking. Using your worksheets to read, review, and practice at home ensures long term retention of the tricks, tips, and processes you learn in class.

Q.) How can so many classes and courses be considered beginner level?

A.) We wanted everyone to be able to jump in comfortably wherever they wanted and take additional classes for certification later. I know that Community Colleges and other programs offer 6-8 "beginning" classes then 6-8 "intermediate" or "advanced" classes.

But, the truth is it took me 2 years, working full-time with overtime during holidays before I learned enough to design any request that came through the shop. In developing the Flowerhandlers Design School Courses I reviewed all the pieces that people asked me for over and over again. The pieces that repeatedly presented themselves became our curriculum - these are the best 48 Lessons to begin with.

As for advanced classes you'll still find me taking workshops from mentors and colleagues who offer new ideas, perspectives, and insider's secrets - I even bring them into my studio and share them with you from time to time through our Celebrity Designer Workshops. Learning trends, fads, and nuances never stops. But you'll not find a better system for the fundamentals that will make your journey easy and carry you the distance no matter how long you are on the path or where you want it to take you.

Q.) How many lessons does the certificate program include?

A.) The 4 Courses: Focus on Shapes, Wedding Bliss, Life Celebrations, and Holidays & Gifts each include twelve (12) projects. In the four Courses there are forty-eight (48) lessons total.

Q.) How does the certification process work?

A.) Each time you complete a Course you'll get a Certificate of Completion. Once you've completed all four Courses you'll be awarded a Certificate of Accomplishment.

The certificates are beautiful evidence of your training that add credibility when displayed in your own office, studio, place of work, or professional portfolio.

Q.) Do I have to take the certificate courses in sequence?

A.) All Courses are beginner level. They can be taken in any order you choose. You will find centerpieces, one-sided designs and novelty work in every Course. What you learn in Wedding Bliss can be applied to home décor. What you learn in Life Celebrations can be used for weddings etc.

The Course Focus on Shapes is seen by most as the place to start. But, if you need to learn about wedding designs NOW - take Wedding Bliss. And, if your favorite holiday is fast approaching, start with the Holidays & Gifts course.

Q.) Are there any continued education resources?

A.) When you receive your Certificate of Accomplishment you'll also get addendum pages (for your journal) which will include resources for further exploration into the floral industry:

  • Organizations - to help you network
  • Publications - that keep you inspired
  • Schools - for continued education
  • Service Providers - for developing a business

These are the resources I share in my consulting practice that will help you easily continue your floral journey after attending the Flowerhandlers Design School. And we offer Business Development programs throughout the year.

Q.) What about ongoing support for professionals?

A.) To promote floristry as livelihood current and former Flowerhandlers Students are invited to ask questions, share ideas, and keep me (Dottie) up-to-date about their floral progress via email at Dottie@Flowerhandlers.com. And, they get discounts on business consulting and coaching when they are ready for the next step.

Q.) Do I have to register early if there is already a class scheduled?

A.) Yes. Registration with prepayment is required AT LEAST ONE WEEK BEFORE CLASS because:

  • Class is held in a working studio which has to be readied for instruction.
  • Your fresh flowers and hard-good supplies have to be procured in advance.
  • Your fresh flowers have to be received and conditioned a day early.
  • Your work-sheets and other paper-work have to be assembled.

Registration closes one week prior to each class because it takes a week to prepare for class. "Walk-ins" won't have been prepared for therefore will not be accepted. If you register and have to cancel due to an emergency, simply contact Dottie so something can be worked out.
