Focus on Shapes

Trends and fads may come and go but the fundamental skills of floral design remain the same. Take this course to learn easy-to-remember mathematical formulas that will enable you to create any shape flower arrangement you want for home decorating, office enhancement, celebrations, and gift giving.

  • Centerpieces (free-style vase, round, oval, & long & low) that can be used on kitchen, dining, banquet, or coffee tables - any place that people can view from all directions.
  • One-sided designs ("L", stylized, triangle, & fan) that are perfect for side tables, breakfronts, console tables, and standing pedestals - those areas against a wall or backdrop where the flowers will be viewed only from one side.
  • Natural Designs (horizontal, vertical, vegetative, & pave) that are less structured and more casual. They are great to use as accent pieces almost anywhere.

The adaptable formulas used to create these twelve projects will allow you to design with a wide variety of flowers and make any size, shape, style piece you need. The formulas will help you decide how many flowers you need to purchase in order to create designs you see pictured in magazines or imagine in your mind. When you complete this course you'll feel confident playing with flowers and comfortable experimenting with a variety of floral designs.

Wedding Bliss

From designing bouquets for the bride & bridesmaids; corsages, boutonnieres & accessories for the wedding party; to decorating the ceremony and embellishing the reception - you'll experience full nuptial emersion in this floral design course.

  • The bridal party (cascade bouquet, flower girl, ring bearer, accessories) is covered. The classic cascade bouquet becomes a head table centerpiece for the bride. Several options for the flower girl and ring bearer are discussed. Traditional corsages and boutonnieres are introduced.
  • Easy ways to create a focal point for the ceremony (2 part topiary, pew decor, accessories) are shown with designs that can be used again at the reception. Another version of corsages and boutonnieres are offered.
  • Reception flowers (favors, hand-tied toss bouquet, cake decor, accessories) that are both stunning and practical! The table centerpiece becomes the favors; the registration table flowers become the toss bouquet. And more variations on corsages and boutonnieres are introduced!

Once you have taken this course you'll be able to design flowers for every aspect of the wedding - from all the very important people, to the ceremony, and the reception party! You'll understand how to co-ordinate all the pieces, how to make the most of your flowers, and how to plan for the whole day.

  • Large and small tribute designs (resting spray, standing spray, satin form, & presentation bouquet) are featured that can be used for viewing from a distance (as on a stage) or close up (as on a guest book table) and also to be presented to someone.
  • Reception designs, generally displayed on easels or placed on columns or stands that stand out from a crowd (statuary urn, grapevine wreath, oasis wreath, & dry foam form) are focused on.
  • Head table and centerpiece designs to be used when people come together for banquets (unity arrangement, tower vase, contemporary, & trio) are created.

When you have completed this course you will be able to design flowers for sympathy, & bereavement gatherings; graduation & acknowledgement ceremonies, corporate grand openings & award shows.

Holidays & Gifts

In this course you'll learn the mechanics of design (preparing containers, using liners, ribbon treatments, anchoring cones, pods, picks & candles) essential for creating special pieces for holidays and gifts throughout the year.

  • Four projects that are perfect for entertaining (stackable design, candle collection, fireside and centerpiece baskets) are designed.
  • Four designs that make great gifts (mini collection, mini tree, shopping bag, & gift box surprise) are styled.
  • Four accents for decorating the home, office, and other environments (mantel, wreath, swag, & garland) are created using pre-formed pieces that are trimmed with flowers and holiday accessories.

This course enables you to stretch your dollars by using an abundance of cost effective foliages, premade forms, and embellishments to make lovely floral gifts and displays with minimum fresh cut flowers. A "Spring" version is taught in April and a "Winter" version is offered in December.
